“We were with him, singing ‘Amazing Grace’ as he left us (did we carry him across or scare him away— valid question),” the “13 Going on 30” actress, 51, wrote on Instagram Monday.
“While there is no tragedy in the death of an 85 year old man who lived a healthy, wonderful life, I know grief is unavoidable, waiting around unexpected corners.”
Jennifer Garner revealed her father, William, died on Saturday.
The “13 Going on 30” star took to Instagram Monday to announce the news.
Despite the loss, Garner reflected on her father’s life with “gratitude” for his “gentle demeanor and quiet strength.
“For how he teased with a mischievous smile, and for the way he invented the role of all in, ever patient girl dad,” she continued. “We are grateful for his work ethic, leadership and faith.”
She also extended that gratitude to the healthcare workers who cared for her father in his final months.

“While there is no tragedy in the death of an 85 year old man who lived a healthy, wonderful life, I know grief is unavoidable, waiting around unexpected corners,” the actress continued.
“Your care extended Dad’s life and gave him time to be in his favorite spots— surrounded by daughters and grandchildren, cheering for his beloved Aggies, captaining a boat, and— most of all—next to his wife of 59 years, our Mom,” the actress added.
“There is so much to say about my dad— my sisters and I will never be done talking about how wonderful he was, so bear with us— but for today I share these memories with my appreciation for the kind and brilliant man, father, and grandfather he was, as well as the loving legacy he left behind.”
Garner completed the emotional post by sharing several never-before-seen photos from her childhood and fun adventures with her father.
Garner recalled the patriarch’s “gentle demeanor and quiet strength.”
She continued, “We are grateful for his work ethic, leadership and faith.”
The “Juno” star also thanked the healthcare workers who helped look after her father.
From picnics eating watermelon together to family portraits, Garner included snippets of their happiest moments.
She also added a Capital One credit card commercial she was in with William from 2016.
Fellow celebrities and fans left their condolences in the comments, with talk show host Kelly Ripa writing, “What a lovely tribute. My condolences to you and your family 🙏🏼.”

Garner explained there was so much more about her dad that she wanted to share.
“I am so sorry Jen sending so much love and healing to you. He was the kindest most gentle sweet man. 🙏🏻❤️ 🕊️,” fashion designer Rachel Zoe added.
“Sending you and your whole family the most love and light and hugs 🤍,” actress Lily Collins chimed in.
“Aw babe sending you my love and prayers for you and your family 🙏🏼,” Eva Longoria added.
She concluded, “But for today I share these memories with my appreciation for the kind and brilliant man, father, and grandfather he was.”

Garner grew up in West Virginia alongside William, her mom, Patricia Ann, and sisters Melissa and Susannah.
The actress recently celebrated her parent’s wedding anniversary in January alongside an adorable picture of the two in front of a flower wall.
“Happy 59th anniversary to my incredibly sweet and loving parents. Thank you, Mom and Dad, for giving my sisters and me such a secure, happy start to life,” she pinned the sweet tribute.
