Jake Gyllenhaal and Sabrina Carpenter Slated for SNL’s Season 49 Finale — Plus a Beloved Alum Returns to Host!

The final two episodes of Saturday Night Live’s season 49 are almost here — and feature some major stars taking the famous stage.

On May 2, SNL announced the lineup for the final two episodes of its current season, which will see a fan-favorite alum return, as well as the musical guest debut for one of Taylor Swift’s latest protégés.

Maya Rudolph is set to host the May 11 show with Vampire Weekend as the musical guest, and Jake Gyllenhaal will host the season’s final episode on May 18, with Sabrina Carpenter slated as the night’s musical guest.

Reacting to the announcement, Carpenter, 24, wrote in a post on Instagram, “SABRINA NIGHT LIVE 😭😭😭😭,” as she shared the Post-It notes of her and Gyllenhaal’s names.

Gyllenhaal, 43, reposted SNL’s post on his Instagram Stories, adding a sticker that read, “So excited!”

Rudolph, 51, and Vampire Weekend, which consists of Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson and Chris Baio, also shared the post to their respective Instagram Stories.

The episodes will mark the third time both Rudolph and Gyllenhaal have hosted the famed late night sketch comedy show, and the fourth time Vampire Weekend has performed. For Rudolph, it’s always an emotional return, as she was a cast member of the show from 2000 to 2007, before shifting her focus to acting.

The decision was also a result of a desire to spend less time commuting and more time with her family, as her husband, Paul Thomas Anderson, and kids were living in L.A. while she was an SNL cast member.

“I thought, ‘This is all going great! I’d always wanted to have kids. I’d always wanted to live in New York. I’d always wanted to be on Saturday Night Live,'” Rudolph told Town & Country Magazine of the years before she relocated to Los Angeles permanently.

She’d be flying coast-to-coast, sometimes with her older daughter, Pearl, now 18, in tow, and recalled: “This little bald baby, listening to the musical guests warm up. I look back and I can’t believe I did that. It was crazy. I don’t think I slept for two years.”

As for Carpenter, her SNL musical guest debut comes after she reached a major milestone with her newest single, “Espresso,” which she dropped on April 12, hours before making her debut at Coachella. The following week, the single clinched a spot on the Billboard Hot 100, securing her first-ever top 10 hit on the chart.

The single’s incredible success came after she wrapped up her run as a supporting act on Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour. Carpenter was the opening act for the tour in Latin America, Australia and Singapore, and it was a gig she described as “very much a childhood dream come true” in an interview with Who What Wear.

“I still probably have not processed it if I’m being completely honest with you,” she told the outlet.

Gyllenhaal’s return to 30 Rock comes two years after his second bout hosting the show, and more than 17 years after his hosting debut.

He first hosted the show in 2007, and when he returned in 2022, he joked in his opening monologue about the time that had gone by. “That was like 400 Marvel movies ago,” he said.

“To give you an idea of what it was like in 2007, in the show I hosted, there was a George W. Bush sketch, there were jokes about the first iPhone, and this is a photo of me from my monologue. There I am in full drag, singing a song from Dreamgirls, to promote a movie where I played a gay cowboy,” he said, referring to Brokeback Mountain.
