The series will follow four receivers and one tight end through the 2023 NFL season.
Davante Adams, Deebo Samuel, and Amon-Ra St. Brown will be part of the series.
The life and work of an NFL star is often fascinating to the public. The way they face challenges, deal with defeats, or celebrate victories are a magnet for viewers, and Netflix knows it, which is why, after the success of its docu-series “Quarterback,” the streaming giant decided to launch “Receiver.”
Just as the original series followed the comings and goings of three star quarterbacks-Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota-the new production will offer viewers a journey into the depths of the careers of four receivers and a tight end, considered among the best in the NFL.
The series, premiering this summer, will follow Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders, Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings, Deebo Samuel of the San Francisco 49ers, Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions, and Niners tight end George Kittle.
Former quarterback Peyton Manning’s production company, Omaha Productions, will be in charge of the series in co-production with NFL Films and the company 2PM Productions, owned by three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes.
From “Quarterback” to “Receiver”
Gabe Spitzer, vice president of Non-Fiction Sports at Netflix, explained, “The natural progression is from a pass to a catch, so we’re excited to dive into the Receiver world after the success of our Quarterback series.”
However, Manning admitted last year that they had had some problems trying to recruit new quarterbacks for a second season of the original series.
“I’d love for someone to call us back and say, ‘I want to do it.’ I had three starting quarterbacks tell me no yesterday, so I’m swallowing my pride,” Manning accepted in statements to The Hollywood Reporter shortly before the 2023 season kickoff.
A great story to tell
Once they overcame the initial problems, Manning said in a statement for the launch of the series, “We are excited to be working again with Netflix and NFL Films to give fans unprecedented access to what it’s like to play receiver at the highest level.”
Spitzer stressed, “NFL Films and Omaha Productions have delivered again in finding unique and dynamic athletes who will further highlight the drama of this sport on and off the field.”
“We were thrilled last summer to see audiences all over the world diving into the lives of NFL quarterbacks. We believe the extraordinary skills, dedication, and passion of the NFL’s great wide receivers – and one tight end – will make a perfect follow-up,” stated Joe Zucco, Supervising Producer for NFL Films.
