The Kadarius Toney era is over in Kansas City.
The 2021 first-round pick with the Giants is getting waived by the Chiefs on Tuesday, according to NFL Network, amid much speculation the polarizing wideout’s time with the team was nearing its end ahead of the 53-man roster deadline.
Toney — who was traded by the Giants in October 2022 and became a Chiefs’ Super Bowl 2023 hero months later — struggled mightily last season, dropping multiple passes in a season-opening loss to the Lions in September 2023 and lining up offsides in a crushing defeat to the Bills that December.
The drama surrounding Toney followed the Chiefs into the postseason, when the former Florida standout accused the team of lying about an injury after he was ruled out of January’s AFC Championship game, an eventual 17-10 win over the Ravens.
He was benched a month later in Super Bowl 2024, when the Chiefs took down the 49ers in overtime, 25-22.
The writing appeared to be on the wall for Toney, who recorded 27 receptions, 169 yards and one touchdown last year, as the Chiefs loaded up on offensive weapons this offseason.
In addition to signing star receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown in March, they selected wideout Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft a month later.
The Chiefs also re-signed familiar faces in Super Bowl 2024 hero Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster, who joins former first-round pick Rashee Rice, Justin Watson and Skyy Moore.
The Chiefs open the season next Thursday against the Ravens.
